Rhymes that Spark Dialogue – Frenkie Lyrics and Translations

As part of our interview collaboration with Frenkie, translations of his lyrics to the songs “Pismo Milanu”, “Nerko”, “Viva la Palestina”, and “Hajmo ih rušit” follow in an appendix.

Pismo Milanu

A three-sided scale – symbol of Bosnia and the Balkans
It’s always my side, your side, and his.
Everyone just uses it –
They tell me: “Mind your own flock and your own yard.”
Trokrilna vaga simbol Bosne i Balkana
Vazda je moja, tvoja, a njegova strana.
Svi se uvijek samo njom koriste –
Kažu mi: "Gledaj svoj tor i svoje dvorište."
We committed crimes, and that’s followed by a big "however":
“You did the same – you burned and stole, too.”
For years and years, we repeat the same among our own,
Never once turning to speak to each other.
Činili smo zločine, i onda veliko "ali",
"I vi ste isto tako palili i krali!"
Godinama tako među svojim ljudima,
A nikako da se obratimo jedni drugima.
And that’s why, Milan, I’m writing you this letter –
So you can see where we are, and that we’re not all the same.
My own will criticize me, but that’s my choice.
My intentions are sincere – that’s why I’m at peace.
I zato te, Milane, pišem ovo pismo –
Namjera je iskrena i zato sam miran.
I still wouldn’t accept their rules today –
Let time decide if I fought or betrayed the cause.
Enough suffering – it boils within me.
I’ve decided to be the first to extend my hand.
Let’s stop lying and fooling each other.
I know you feel fear when you walk through Sarajevo –
You see Arabic letters, hear the call to prayer.
I get scared too when I see the Wahhabis.
And I’m scared now, as I write these lines –
They’ll say I spat on our victims and our grandfathers.
And I believe you’re waiting for a signal from the other side –
I know that feeling, because I’m waiting for it, too.
I sad me je strah dok pišem ove redove –
Reći će da sam pljunuo na svoje žrtve i djedove.
I vjerujem da čekaš s druge strane signal –
Znam to dobro, jer ga čekam i ja.
We have so much in common right now –
When we’re guests, we lie about our names.
You feel like a pig in Tehran –
It’s the same way I feel when I go to Trebinje.
Toliko imamo zajedničkog ovog trena –
Kad smo u gostima, lažemo za imena.
Osjećaš se kao u Teheranu svinja –
Otprilike kao i ja kad odem do Trebinja.
It’s about easier if we stop pretending.
Now it’s all about who’s got bigger numbers in which city.
We find comfort in being the majority –
But there’s no real good in that, you know it and I know it.
Lakše je da se ne pretvaramo više.
Postalo je važno kojih je u kom gradu više.
Sigurnost u većini – to nam prija.
Hajra od toga nema – znaš ti, znam i ja.
I won’t bullshit you now about how Dodik lies to you –
Taking money while blinding people with nationalism.
We’re not brothers – and fuck the old days
When we visited each other for Eid and for feasts of patron saints.
Neću ti sad srat’ kako vas Dodik laže –
Uzima lovu dok nacionalizmom oči maže.
Nismo braća – i jebeš stare dane
Kad smo drugima išli na Bajrame i slave.
All of it fell apart quick, all of it was sold –
And brothers slaughtered each other overnight.
I don’t want to measure victims or tally the dead –
Burned mosques and demolished churches.
Sve to brzo propade i sve to prodaše –
A braća se preko noći poklaše.
Neću da mjerimo žrtve i brojimo mrtve –
Spaljene džamije i srušene crkve.
Let whoever wants to – go ahead.
But I won’t manipulate someone else’s pain.
I want to listen to you, and I want us to talk –
Because this way, we’re going nowhere.
I know – it’s hard being constantly accused,
Hearing “that genocidal people” from my side.
You’re not like that – and I get it, it’s not easy.
But know this – I don’t think that way.
Znam, teško je kad te optužuju stalno,
I kad čuješ od mojih onu "genocidan narod".
Nisi takav, i kontam – nije lako,
Al’ znaj i ti – ja ne mislim tako.
Refrain

It’s hard to express sympathy to the other side –
Your own will kick you, and they will spit on you.
They’ll twist and misuse it, and drag you into another conflict –
And the fire burst once again.
Refren

Teško je drugima izraziti sućut –
Tvoji će te šutnut’, a oni pljunut’.
Zloupotrijebiti, u novi sukob gurnut’ –
I tako će vatra opet buknut’.
It’s hard to express sympathy to the other side –
Your own will kick you, and they will spit on you.
But we can show sympathy to the other side –
Or spend another 20 years going around in circles.
Teško je drugima izraziti sućut –
Tvoji će te šutnut’, a oni pljunut’.
Možemo drugima izraziti sućut –
Ili još 20 godina ovako u krug.

Nerko

Nerko, my old friend – the Lily is Golden.
I have a war-worn picture of him.
Nerko, moj stari drug – Zlatni je ljiljan.
Jednu ratnu, izlizanu sliku od njega imam.
He was wounded twice – and when he recovered,
He went back to the front line and never hid.
He spent three long winters in the trenches –
He didn’t fight for Alija, but for his own family.
“Buddy, there’s no country in the world I
love more than my little daughter.
"Nema, bolan, te države na svijetu koju više volim nego svoju malu kćerku.
You could add a million states to this country–
It still wouldn’t be worth as much as her tiny fingernail.
Fuck the flag and this new anthem –
I fought for her,” he told me over a beer.
Jebo zastavu i ovu novu himnu –
Ja sam nju branio", rek’o mi je uz pivu.
Now, at his place on Koševsko –
He hypes up Sarajevo and, of course, shits on Željezničar.
Danas, na Koševskom, kod njega na sijelu –
Diže Saraj’vo i, naravno, prca Želju.
I listen to him and admire how humble he is – he didn't hide during the war, nor did he sell out
As night slowly sinks over the city –
Nerko opens up more and more over beer:
Kako lagano noć grad potapa –
Nerko mi se uz pivo sve više otvara:
“If you'd told me this, I couldn’t have dreamed it –
I fought so that some thief and idiot could benefit.
"Da si mi rek’o ovo – ne bih mog’o sanjat’.
Ratov’o sam da bi im’o lopov i papak.
Our people are barely getting by,
And these guys still steal – you can’t even weigh how much.
Raja počela kraj s krajem slagat’,
A ovi i dalje kradu – to ne mo’š izvagat’.
They lie three times before they finish a sentence –
It won’t end well, I swear to you on Pikić.
Slaže triput dok ti nešto ispriča –
Neće dobro završit’, kunem ti se u Pikića.
Look at us war veterans –
No one cares about us except ourselves.
And that money they give you monthly –
feels like they’re spitting in your face, in the end.
I ono para što ti mjesečno daju –
Isto k’o da te pljunu u lice na kraju.
And the kids? They're ignorant peasants –
They only care about smartphones, cars, and folk hits.
A djeca su mali, nepismeni seljaci –
Samo mobitel, auto i narodnjaci.
They don’t care, and they’re not bothered by the theft –
I feel like walking into the government with a bomb.”
"They used us – and in the end, threw us away.
Manipulated us – some didn’t even realize it.
"Nas su iskoristili, na kraju bacili
Izmanipulisani, neki nisu ni shvatili.
It doesn’t matter what side you were on, my friend –
If you still trust them today, then you’re a fool.
Nije bitno s koje si strane, drug –
Ako im i danas vjeruješ, onda si glup.
We bought from each other, sold to each other –
I feel sorry for the people who suffered because of them.
I feel sorry they believed in certain things,
I feel sorry they believed in lies.
Frenkie, you know exactly which people I mean –
We didn’t matter, we were just pawns.
Frenka, znaš koji su to ljudi –
Mi nismo bili bitni, bili smo pijuni.
Listen closely to what your friend’s saying –
We were just numbers in a spreadsheet.
Slušaj me dobro šta ti drug veli –
Bili smo samo ona cifra u tabeli.
And now my daughter’s about to start school –
And I’ll have to cut short what we eat again.
I sad će mi od kćerke škola počet’ –
I moraću od usta odvajati opet.
See what this country’s given me?
Now tell me – how would you look at this lily?"
Who wants a Golden Lily?
President, give one to everyone right away!
Ko hoće jednog Zlatnog ljiljana –
Predsjednika odmah svima da!
He’ll be described as a hero in the history books –
But he’ll be a broke hero, buried in worries.
Biće zapisan k’o heroj u knjigama –
Bićeš heroj bez marke, u brigama.
Who wants a Golden Lily?
President, give one to everyone right away!
Ko hoće jednog Zlatnog ljiljana –
Predsjednika odmah svima da!
He’ll be described as a hero in the history books –
But he’ll be a hero without a Mark in his pocket, buried in worries.
Biće zapisan k’o heroj u knjigama –
Bićeš heroj bez marke, u brigama.
Refrain X2
Refren X2

Viva La Palestina feat. Krešo Bengalka

After the Holocaust, we said "Never again"
And then Vukovar, and a rain of grenades
After Bosnia, we said "Never again"
And then again, they forgot the promises
Nakon holokausta smo rekli "Nikad više"
A onda Vukovar, i od granata kiše
Nakon Bosne smo rekli "Nikad više"
I onda opet obećanja zaboraviše
Today Gaza is burning, and no one even cares
All the masks have fallen, there is no shame or disgrace
I do what I can, I won’t stay silent or turn a blind eye
I stand in defense like the Sarajevo Purim
They want to tell us what we’re allowed to say?
"From the river to the sea" — what happened to “equality”?
My heroes whose words still carry weight:
Finkelstein, Roger Waters, Gideon Levy
Hoće nam reći šta reći smijemo mi?
From river to the sea, šta bi sa equality?
Moji heroji čija riječ danas vrijedi
Finkelstein, Roger Waters, Gideon Levy
I want peace for Gaza, not children living in fear
And one day Netanyahu in The Hague
I raise my hand and my voice against apartheid
The wall fell in Berlin — yours will fall too
I jednog dana Netanjahua u Haagu
Protiv apartheida dižem ruku i glas
Pao je zid u Bеrlinu, past će i taj vaš
Black-white-green-red for freedom
That’s all I can do and all I’ll show to God
Only the truth, even if I lose everything in life
"Free Palestine" — until I end up in the grave

Edo Maajka

Yes
A-a, nothing is over yet
A-a
Yes
Yes
A-a, nije gotovo još ništa
A-a
Yes
Frenkie, Mire, Edo, and Hamaz Aga Blanca
Here to destroy the government like it’s a fucking yard
This is constant resistance, this is poison for them
I’ll speak the truth until I’m done with the fight
Frenkie, Mire, Edo i Hamaz Aga Blanca
When war veterans wash the profiteer's cars
When fighters ask themselves why they defended this country
On TV, they just bullshit, open new committees
So they can launder cash, while we wait in line
Kada ratni invalidi profiteru kola peru
This country is fucked, I need to move away from here
Now we’ve got our own Thompson — his name is Dino Merlin
In a country where Deen is “in”, and you’re thrown out
If you’re not on their team or someone’s daddy’s son
Ako nisi njihov tim i ako nisi tatin sin
I watch them build castles, they forgot the fighters
And our dear sisters bend over for SFOR soldiers
Few have the balls, they stay quiet in front of others
Because, bro, that name is never to be spoken aloud
But I’m not that type, I’ll point fingers
I’ll say it loud and clear, I’ll say it before it’s too late
I’ll say it once, twice, three times, and I’ll repeat it again
I’ll always speak it, and you can try to knock me down
A ja nisam pod tom vrstom, ja pokazujem i prstom
Ja kažem glasno i jasno, ja kažem dok nije kasno
Ja ću reć' jednom, dvaput, triput i opet ću ponovit'
Uvijek ću to govorit', a vi me probajte oborit'
Now new elections are coming, so it’ll be fun again
Tuzla still has no water, but hey, we got a new lake
Now elections are coming so they’re fixing the streets
I’m sure the nationalists will win again
Soon our highway will be finished
Right when I buy my son a motorbike for his 18th birthday
More on that later — I’m sailing with a lost fleet
But I keep my soul clean while others chase money
There’s no better fate for us here, bro
That’s why more and more are preparing for the diaspora
We mostly have nothing — and even if I had something, where would it come from?
Buy, flip, sell — and then what?
mi?
Otkupi, dodaj, prodaj i onda
[Chorus: Edo Maajka - not translated]
[Refren: Edo Maajka - nije preveden]
My country is a whore that everyone who wanted to could fuck
Back then, I couldn’t — I was too young
You stole everything, at least give us something back
My uncle wasn’t in a camp because of you for nothing
Država mi je kurva koju je jeb'o 'ko je htio
Ja to tad nisam smio jer sam još premlad bio
Pokrali ste sve, vratite nam barem dio
Nije moj amidža valjda zbog vas u logoru bio
Kids are killing themselves and jumping off buildings
While they take from our budget for their own kids
We don’t have money for bread, they party every weekend
We have evidence, they still play dumb
My Bosnia is from the Neretva to the Drina
Your Bosnia is from Baščaršija to Čengić Vila
I’m not leaving and I’m not seeking asylum
I want my people to live better in my country
Moja Bosna je od Neretve do Drine
Vaša Bosna je od Baščaršije do Čengić Vile
Neću da idem odavde i neću azile
Hoću da moji ljudi u mojoj državi bolje žive
You killed our childhoods, but we’re not completely dead yet
This is the final letter — now we move to action (Yes!)
I can’t keep living life like it’s all about nepotistic connections
And I’ll shoot those three monkeys wearing suits
Ubili ste djetinjstvo, al' još skroz mrtvi nismo
I don’t trust Paddy who drinks with war criminals
And I don’t trust the imam who’s obsessed with politics
They don’t even want their own lives — they’re rotten snakes
Just so you know — the people are no longer as naive as before
I love Bosnia, and you quietly trample her on the floor
I represent a country that doesn’t yet have an anthem
You represent three nations, but you steal as a team
So fuck your mothers — the climate is changing now
Ja volim Bosnu, a vi je gazite na podu mirnu
Ja predstavljam državu koja još nema himnu
Vi predstavljate tri naroda, a kradete u timu
E jebem vam mater u pičku sad mijenjamo klimu
I don’t know how you sleep peacefully at night
By now, I’d be chased by paranoias
Your family never wanted to work honestly
And that’s why your children will suffer for the evil deeds
Ne znam kako možete noćima mirno spavat
Mene bi davno počele neke paranoje ganjat
Vaša familija nikad nije pošteno raditi htjela
I zato će vaša djeca ispaštati zla djela
My back is already bruised and I’m running out of strength
I keep waiting to wake up — but this is already reality
Just a few more years and I’ll start to suffocate
I’ve got nothing left to lose — I’m going to bring them down
[Chorus: Edo Maajka - not translated]
[Refren: Edo Maajka - nije preveden]
