The journal Kino! has published an article Engagement and Memory Work in Post-Yugoslav Film Cultures: Reflections, Refractions, and Horizons by Natalija Majsova. As Majsova is stating, “This article presents various modes of engagement with collective memory characteristic of post-Yugoslav film cultures. The aim of the article is to unpack the idea that, in the context of contemporary film cultures, memory work is a mode of media engagement constituted through networks of regional and transnational infrastructures that, apart from filmmakers, involve various gatekeepers, funding mechanisms, and organizational settings. Offering an analytical overview of academic discussions about the definition, dominant aesthetic, aims, and working methods characteristic of post-Yugoslav film, the article pursues the outlined argument while highlighting some of the ways this growing corpus has engaged with memory, by working with stories about the past and perspectives on this past, contributing to documentation and establishing new mnemonic corpora, and generating direct and indirect impact on collective memory in the context of regional critical debates, festivals, and trends.”
